Sculpture "Egyptians"

Sculpture "Egyptians"
Croatian academic sculptor Jozo Turkalja (1890–1943) made the sculpture entitled “Egipćani—The Egyptians” which was placed between 1925 and 1928 in front of the newly built reptile house in the Zagreb ZOO. This sculpture is made of concrete and it is typical example of Egyptomania during the Art Deco period (1920's-1930's).

The sculpture presents the seated male figure with artificial beard and nemes on his head. He is wearing apron around his waist. According this iconography we can presume that this seated figure was ancient Egyptian pharaoh. On the both sides on the base on which man is seating there are reliefs of the women with the hands up, as typical representation of the admiration of the king.
